2016 NFL.com Fantasy Football

My 16th year of playing NFL.com fantasy football has concluded and the Highland Executions (10-4-0) and the Highland LavaRockets (9-4-0) made the playoffs. The Executions bowed out in the first round, but clinched their 5th division title in their 16 year history. The LavaRockets won their 2nd division title in their 15 year history. The team lost in their NFL.com fantasy football league championship game. The Highland GraveDiggers (8-5-1) came up short from making the playoffs, and it was all due to a tie instead of a win.

2016 Highland Executions

2000-2016
Highland Executions (10-4-0) had a great season by finishing 2nd in their league and clinching their division, making them 5-time division champions during their 16 year history. They've won 3 NFL.com league championships. The Executions finished their 2016 season having their 4th best record in team history along with breaking a 4-year playoff drought.

The Executions won their first four games to kick off their season. The team played exactly like they had during their first season (2000), in-which they finished 11-3-0 and won their division and league championship. Their best season was in 2007, as they finished 12-2-0 and won their division, but in shocking fashion, lost in the first round of the playoffs.

The Executions barely won their first two games to start the season. Their first by 4 points and their second by 3 points. Week 5 they lost their first game by an inch, 102-103. Their next two games they won by a landslide.

The team was on a 3-game win streak after a week 8 victory.

Week 9 saw the Executions take on the #1 team in the league. It was #2 vs. #1 and the Executions got slaughtered 63-93, which took them down to 7-2-0. The team bounced back with two straight wins, but came up short in week 12 with a 99-102 loss. The Executions came back with a week 13 win, but lost their final game of the season 71-80 and finished the season 10-4-0, but won their division, thus notching a spot in the playoffs. The Executions seemed to have a good lineup, thus nothing was changed heading into the 1st round of the playoffs. A victory meant heading into the league championship game.

The Executions got knocked on their cans during the 1st round and lost their game 78-93. Quarterback (QB) Derek Carr had a so-so game and running back Carlos Hyde had a weak game, only scoring 5 points. The team didn't have enough steam against their opponent.

The team headed to the 3rd place game and lost. All the Executions players notched up quite a bit of points, but the Broncos defense only scored 1 point, which hurt in the end. The Executions lost 113-120.

The team had a wonderful season, but a terrible playoff run. Last year the team finished 7-7-0.
=======================================================================

Oakland Raiders quarterback (QB) Derek Carr was the starter and lead the team in points during the season. Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston served as the back-up. He played 1 game (bye week). This was the first time the Executions drafted Carr.

The Executions had a perfect running game with Dallas Cowboys rookie running back (RB) Ezekiel Elliott (who had an awesome season) and San Francisco 49'rs RB Carlos Hyde. Both were starters for the entire season. Back-up RB's during both teams bye week were Justin Forsett (Baltimore Ravens), whom was on the team for the first 4 weeks (never used) until he was let go, thus the Executions released him, though, he was later picked up by the Detroit Lions, released again, and later picked up by the Denver Broncos. 2nd backup was 49'rs RB Shaun Draughn, who served as the starter for weeks 7, 9, and 10 (week 8 was a bye) due to Hyde being injured and out during the weeks above.

Prior to week 8 the team snatched Oakland Raiders RB DeAndre Washington off waivers, due to the 49'rs having a bye week (Draughn & Hyde). Washington was a disapointment for the team and was released the next week.

Sammy Watkins (Buffalo Bills), Donte Moncrief (Indianapolis Colts), and DeSean Jackson (Washington Redskins) all started at the wide receiver (WR) position at the start of the season.

Benched WR's were Ted Ginn (Carolina Panthers) and DeVante Parker (Miami Dolphins). Parker was the only player out of the two who was still on the team heading into week 15. Those positions stayed the same for the first 3 weeks, but Moncrief was let go due to having a major injury (out weeks 3 - 7) and Watkins was out for the season, at least at the time it looked like he was going to be out on IR and the Executions released Watkins. Heading into week 4 the starters were Ginn, Parker, and Jackson, which wasn't the best core of WR's. The team picked up WR's Danny Amendola (New England Patriots) and Victor Cruz (N.Y. Giants) and benched both. All three starting WR's had terrible games. None of the positions changed, until week 6 when Cruz was started, along with the returning tight end (TE) Rob Gronkowski (New England Patriots).

Week 8 Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell was picked up off waivers to try and add depth to the WR position. Week 10 WR San Diego Charger Travis Benjamin was picked up, but never started a game.

For week 11, the Executions picked up WR Tyreek Hill (Kansas City Chiefs) off waivers. He was a huge boost for the team. Due to continued injuries, the team let WR Jackson go. The Executions scooped him back up off waivers for week 13. With the acquisition of Hill and LaFell, things started looking better for the team at the WR position for the last 4-5 weeks of the season.

The team started Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron. Gronkowski and Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert were both injured at the start of the season. The Executions had some negative vibes by starting Cameron, who in week 1 scored 0 points and the entire 2016 season had just 10 points. The team let him go after week 1 and picked up Atlanta Falcons TE  Jacob Tamme off waivers.

Tamme had a good week 2, but Gronkowski returned to the field for week 3 scoring 0 points. Week 4 he scored 1 point. Week 5 he picked up the pace with 10 points and week 6 he scored 22 points. Weeks 7, 8, and 9 looked promising at the TE position.

For the first 5 weeks of the season Eifert didn't play in any games and the Executions released him and picked up Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (week 9), but looking back, the Executions should've never released Eifert. Tamme was released during week 10, due to not putting up any points and struggling with an injury.

Gronkowski was yet again injured heading into week 11 and would be out for the entire season. With Eifert and Tamme gone, Ebron finished the season as the starter.

The Executions only drafted 1 kicker (K), which was part of the league lineup. The team felt very comfortable with K Blair Walsh of the Minnesota Vikings, who was marvelous last season.

Walsh had a great week 1, but so-so for weeks 2 & 3, but he was struggling. The team picked up Kansas City Chiefs K Cairo Santos, who was a huge improvement over Walsh.

Week 5 the team picked up K Josh Lambo from the San Diego Chargers and he remained the starter for the rest of the season, with Santos the benched kicker. Santos had a better season than Lambo, but there wasn't much of a point difference between the two.

The Executions had two good K's, but the team had a solid defense with the Denver Broncos starting all season. Weeks 15 & 16 the teams defense struggled with 7 points scored in week 15 and 1 point for week 16.

Player of The Year: QB David Carr (Oakland Raiders)
Biggest Disappointment: WR DeVante Parker (Miami Dolphins)

2016 Highland GraveDiggers

2001 - 2016
Highland GraveDiggers (8-5-1-0) started their 15th NFL.com Fantasy Football season in perfect fashion, but came up short and missed the playoffs, their 2nd straight year. The GraveDiggers are 2-time NFL.com Fantasy Football League Champions and 2-time division champions.

The team won their first two games, but the tide rolled in as the team would lose weeks 3, 4, and 5, which was rough, but with some roster changes, week 6 looked promising with a 93-90 victory. The team won another game in week 7 with a score of 64-50 and were 4-3-0 at the halfway mark of the season.

While the team was able to turn things around quickly, things changed in week 8. The team didn't win or lose a game, but received a dreaded 74-74 tie. Dreaded, meaning the tie would come back to haunt the 4-3-1 GraveDiggers as they headed to the playoffs in week 15, or so they thought.

A tie was better than a loss, but the GraveDiggers had to move on and they did with a week 9 victory, but a painful week 10 loss.

Week 12 rolled around and the GraveDiggers played the #1 team in the league, whom were 10-2-0. The team got a victory against them earlier in the season, but this time they came back with a 65-151 victory of their own. Four weeks later that #1 team would go on and win the league championship.

The GraveDiggers picked up a nice week 13 victory and won their final game of the season by beating the 4th place team in the league 65-63. We both had the same record (8-5-1) and 2nd place in our divisions. With 3 division leaders heading to the playoffs, the 4th team is basically the wild card team.

I had the season winning record against that team, which week 14 was our only meeting. They had more season points for than I did. 1,162.00 against my 1,097.00, so the other team made the playoffs by 65 points for.

The GraveDiggers headed to the consolation bracket and squeezed by their first game 66.00 to 65.00, but flopped in the 5th place game by 75.00 to 97.00

The team had a good season, but it would've been much better with a playoff run. Last season they finished 6-8-0 and missed the playoffs.
======================================

At the start of the 2016 the GraveDiggers started Green Bay Packers quarterback (QB) Aaron Rodgers over Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, which both put up big points for fantasy owners last season, and were no different this year.

The GraveDiggers started Stafford for weeks 6-9, and Rodgers still out performed Stafford, but in the long run it didn't hurt the team, but the GraveDiggers started Rodgers heading into week 10 and continued to start him for the rest of the season and into the consolation bracket, which was the right move, because from weeks 11-16, Stafford struggled point wise.

San Diego Chargers running back (RB) Danny Woodhead and Indianapolis Colts' Frank Gore were the starting RB's heading into week 1. Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles and Arizona Cardinals Chris Johnson were benched.

After week 2, Woodhead was injured and out for the season. It was a blow to the team, as Woodhead was the starting RB for the GraveDiggers. Sproles became a starter heading into week 3.

With Sproles being on a bye in week 4, (team released Chris Johnson due to lack of points) the GraveDiggers picked up Detroit Lions RB Dwayne Washington, but became a dud by scoring 0 points. He wouldn't score any points for fantasy owners until week 9. The GraveDiggers released him heading into week 5. They picked up Baltimore Ravens RB Terrance West, which was a plus, as he became the starter for the Ravens, as the team released Justin Forsett.

Gore and West strengthened the RB position. Sproles was in the starting position once again due to the Ravens (West) having a week 8 bye.

The two started for the rest of the season, but didn't have a great week 16 consolation bracket game. Gore scored 5 points and West scored 3 points. Sproles scored 10 points, but the team lost 75.00 - 97.00, so it wouldn't have made a difference.

The GraveDiggers made a bold move by starting two tight ends (TE) at the start of the season. The team started Carolina Panthers WR Ted Ginn over N.Y. Giants WR Victor Cruz, who put up some good numbers in week 2. From the get go, the team started TE Jordan Reed (Washington Redskins) and Panthers TE Greg Olsen. Reed started over Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker and Olsen started over injured TE (heading into the season) Tyler Eifert (Cincinnati Bengals). Benched was N.Y. Giants WR Dwayne Harris.

With a 2-3-0 record heading into week 6 and a 3-game winless streak, the players that were benched (Walker & Cruz) weren't doing any better point wise, infact, they were doing worse. The team released Eifert (due to being injured and not playing) and picked up Tampa Bay WR Adam Humphries off waivers.

The team got a 93.00-90.00 win in week 6. It didn't make a difference, but the team benched Ginn and started Sproles in the flex position (WR or RB could start) Sproles scored 3 points while Ginn scored 10, but it didn't make a difference with the win intact. The team was back at .500 at 3-3-0 and won again in week 7 to go 4-3-0 at the midway point of the season.

Due to two byes, Walker started while the team picked up St. Louis Rams WR Kenny Britt. That gave the team a boost with a week 7 victory, with him as a starter.

Due to another bye, Britt was benched and Olsen started, but scored 0 points. The team pulled out of week 8 with a 74-74 tie.

The GraveDiggers released Humphries (never started) and picked up Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell, which was a step up. He was benched for week 8 and scored 0 points.

The trio of Olsen, Walker, and Ginn continued to give the GraveDiggers victories and the team was 5-3-1 heading into week 10.

The Tennessee Titans had a week 13 bye, thus Walker was benched and Britt started once again. The GraveDiggers snatched a 100-70 victory as Britt scored 10 points. Ginn put up 12, while Olsen put up 2. Olsen continued to struggle, but with him in the lineup, the team continued to add victories and he stayed as a starter.

The team was 7-5-1 heading into the final game of the season. Olsen was benched as Walker returned to the lineup from the bye week. Rodgers and Gore were the only two that put up big points and the GraveDiggers slid by with a 65-63 victory and grabbing the 4th place tie in the league.

Missing the playoffs was rough, but with Britt, Walker, and Ginn in the lineup, the team (yet again) hitched a 66.00-65.00 victory, but lost painfully the next week 75.00-97.00 and settled for 6th place out of 12 teams in the league.

The GraveDiggers were very strong at the kicking (K) position. The team drafted New England Patriots K Stephen Gostkowski and Green Bay Packers Matt Crosby. Gostkowski started the first 8 weeks of the season. The Patriots were on a bye week and Crosby started and continued to do so until week 11. Gostkowski returned to the starting position and finished off the season.

The Denver Broncos defense (D) started all 16 weeks (excluding bye week) with the Detroit Lions D taking over that week.

Player of The Year: QB Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers)
Biggest Disappointment: TE Jordan Reed (Washington Redskins)

2016 Highland LavaRockets

2001-2016
Highland LavaRockets (9-4-0) had a remarkable year. The team almost matched their 2010 season, which saw them win their first division and league championship with a 9-5-0 record. The difference this year was the LavaRockets came up short (to say the least) and lost in the league championship game 79.80 - 115.80. They did manage to end their 15th season with the best record in team history. Heading into the season, the LavaRockets had missed the playoffs 3-straight years. With a league championship at the tip of their fingers, they managed to become 2-time division champions.

The LavaRockets kicked their season off with four straight wins. Week 1 (82.30 - 78.20), Week 2 (126.05 - 81.65), Week 3 (87.50 - 78.10) and Week 4 (98.25 - 55.40). None of those games were close, besides week 1, but the LavaRockets started out 6th in their league out of 12 teams. After their first win, the team jumped to 4th place. Week 3 saw the team take the 2nd place spot, which they held until week 5.

The LavaRockets were on a roll, until their slip in week 5. They lost against the team they were tied with for 2nd place, 75.75 - 118.18. The LavaRockets dropped to third place in their league. All season the team held onto their division lead.

Week 6 the team got back on track, but fell in week 7 with a 80.80 - 91.40 loss. With their loss in weeks 5 and 7, the team didn't change their roster. Carolina Panthers quarterback (QB) Cam Newton was out due to an injury, thus the back-up was Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles, but he had a bye. The LavaRockets scrambled and picked up Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill off waivers. Tannehill wasn't playing good at this point in the season, but was the best starter on waivers.

Tannehill only put up 5.50 points while Panthers wide receiver (WR) Ted Ginn had -1.50 and the Denver Broncos defense (D) played terrible, putting up 4.00. The LavaRockets' week 7 loss came with Newton on a bye and Bortles as the starter, which he played well, but starting Buffalo Bills running back (RB) LeSean McCoy only scored 1.10 points, which hurt the team. With a good performance by McCoy, the team could've won week 7, but instead, the team headed into week 8 being 5-2-0 and being 4th in the league, but still leading in their division.

The team notched victories in weeks 8 & 9, but came up short in week 10 against the 2nd place team, whom they'd also lose the league championship to. The LavaRockets lost 85.15 - 100.20, but still were division leaders and 3rd in the league.

With a devastating week 10 loss, the LavaRockets rolled it off their shoulders and came back with a week 11 victory to place 2nd in their league and captured their 2nd division title, and making the playoffs.

The team came up with another victory in week 12, but lost their final game of the season against the 2nd place team in their division. The LavaRockets were glad they had secured a playoff spot with two weeks left in the season.

The team once again faced the 2nd place team in their division heading into the playoffs, which they had a 1-1-0 record against during the season. The LavaRockets had a 9-4-0 season record while their quarterfinal opponents were 7-6-0.

Heading into the quarterfinal game, the LavaRockets thought about playing Bortles as the starting QB, but decided they had been on a good roll, and Newton started to pick things up during this time. In the end, it was the right move.

With a 84.40 - 78.70 (5.70 points) win, the division champions were heading into the semi-finals and facing the 2nd best team in the league. The LavaRockets, somehow, someway, pulled off a 4.95 point victory to head to the league championship game. The lineup was kept the same, with Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor being benched for returning rookie and New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas, whom was sidelined the previous week with an injury. Pryor scored 1.90 points while Thomas scored 11.20.

LavaRockets (4th place) had a huge hill to climb to defeat the 2nd place team in the league. The LavaRockets were knocked to the curb and lost 79.80 - 115.80 in the championship game. Even if the LavaRockets started Bortles, they still would've lost 95.25 - 115.80. All the other players played well, but Newton had a so-so day, while the Denver Broncos defense played horrible, racking only 1 point. The other team just had more fire power.

The team had a nearly perfect season, with some bumps in the road, but the team had a good playoff run. Last season the LavaRockets were 8-6-0 and missed the playoffs for the third straight year.
============================================

Prior to the start of the 2016 season, the LavaRockets drafted QB's Newton and Bortles, which Bortles out performed Newton in terms of total fantasy points. 336.00 to 314.00. Newton started the entire season, excluding the bye week and when Newton was injured and Bortles was on a bye.

RB's McCoy and Indianapolis Colt Frank Gore lead the way with a decent core of RB's. Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson was benched and let go due to a season ending injury heading into week 5.

The team picked up New Orleans Saints RB John Kuhn for insurance, but released him after week 7.

McCoy was injured, thus the LavaRockets picked up Buffalo Bills' back-up RB Mike Gillislee, which was a bold move, but one that paid off. Gillislee scored 15.40 points to help the team in a week 8 victory. The team held onto him until the start of week 11, due to not needing him anymore. Gillislee was released and the LavaRockets picked up the Baltimore Ravens defense off waivers in time for the Broncos going on a bye.

McCoy returned to the lineup for week 9 and helped the team earn another victory. The LavaRockets picked up N.Y. Jets RB Bilal Powell, whom was benched.

The Buffalo Bills had a bye heading into week 10, which meant both McCoy and Gillislee wouldn't be playing. Powell become a starter along with Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson, whom the team picked up off waivers. Thompson had put up some decent points in previous weeks, but only scored 1.60 points, while Powell was impressive with 14.90, helping the LavaRockets with a week 10 victory.

From week 11 and into the teams championship game, both McCoy and Gore continued to be starters. Both continued to stack up points, until the championship game, where Gore scored 6.40 points while McCoy earned 20.50.

The LavaRockets had a good group of RB's, but wide receivers (WR) was another story. N.Y. Jets Brandon Marshall, Carolina Panthers Ted Ginn, and Jacksonville Jaguars Allen Hurns were the starting WR's heading into week 1. Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams was benched. Williams shined off and on through the season.

The trio above started for the first four games, mostly due to the team being 4-0-0. None put up remarkable numbers, but Marshall had two good weeks during the four game stretch.

Due to the Jaguars (Hurns) having a week 5 bye, Williams got his first start of the season and scored 7.00 points. Sadly, the team lost that week.

After the week 5 loss and WR Ginn scoring -1.50 points, he was released and the team picked up Chicago Bears WR Eddie Royal, who had been dealing with an injury, thus Williams continued to be a starter and put up 7.50 points in week 6.

With the Cowboys (Williams) having a bye heading into week 7, the team scooped up rookie, and New Orleans Saint Michael Thomas, who was a huge grab.

Marshall, Hurns, and Thomas were starters for the next 4 weeks. The trio would go 2-2-0. With Williams in a slump and Royal never being a starter while injured, Royal was released heading into week 9. The next week Williams followed.

Needing some insurance, the LavaRockets picked up WR's DeSean Jackson (Washington Redskins) and N.Y. Jets Quincy Enunwa off waivers. Both players were benched.

The LavaRockets faced a problem heading into week 11. The Jets had a bye, meaning Marshall and Enunwa wouldn't be playing, this left Thomas and Hurns as the only WR's. The team went to the waivers and picked up Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills. The Dolphins were struggling at this point in the season, but thankfully, things later picked up.

Stills and Hurns didn't help much, but the team came up with a victory and won their division, securing a playoff spot.

It took 12 weeks to do it, but the LavaRockets finally had a decent core of WR's. Marshall (bye week) returned to the lineup, along with Thomas, but the team picked up Terrelle Pryor off waivers. The Cleveland Browns WR was quietly sitting on waivers. Hurns was performing poorly and was benched along with Stills. Stills was benched due to there not being any room on the starting roster. All three WR's put up big points in week 12, helping the team clinch a victory.

The team suffered a loss heading into the playoffs. The Browns (Pryor) had a bye, while Thomas and Marshall didn't put up much of any points. Benched Stills (2.10) and Hurns (0.00) wouldn't have made a difference in the loss.

Stills found himself in the starting lineup due to Thomas being injured heading into the quarterfinals of the playoffs. Marshall, Stills, and Pryor were the starters and grabbed a victory.

Pryor scored 0.30 points and was benched in favor of Thomas' return to the lineup. The duo of Stills and Thomas put up some impressive numbers in the semifinals, seeing the duo score 11.20 points. A bench Pryor scored 1.90 while Marshall earned a low 1.60.

The trio were starters in the championship game, but the outcome wouldn't have mattered. Thomas and Stills performed well, but Marshall scored a low 2.80 points. Hurns scored 0.00 (benched) Pryor scored 3.60 (benched) while Enunwa itched 4.40 points (benched).

LavaRockets drafted TE Delanie Walker (Tennessee Titans) and Jason Witten (Dallas Cowboys) at the start of the season.

Witten took over the starting position in week 3 due to Walker being injured. Witten was released after week 4 due to poor performance. Walker returned for week 4 and was the starter until week 13, due to the Titans having a bye. The LavaRockets went out and scooped up Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate, which was a good pick-up. He scored 14.60 points, but was replaced in week 14 when Walker returned. The team was solid through the entire season at the TE position.

The team drafted New England Patriots kicker (K) Stephen Gostkowski, who for the past several years has been wonderful (point wise), but his stats took a hit this season, but again, the LavaRockets had depth at the kicking position. Minnesota Vikings Blair Walsh was drafted as the back-up.

The Vikings released Walsh and so did the LavaRockets. The team went to the waivers and picked up Philadelphia Eagles K Caleb Sturgis, which was a surprise. Blair finished the season (not on any team) at #31 while Sturgis finished #5 in fantasy football.

The LavaRockets didn't start Sturgis until the Patriots had their bye in week 9. Sturgis remained the starter for the rest of the season.

Defense wins championships (that's what they say) and the LavaRockets came close with the Broncos being the starting defense, excluding the bye week. Washington Redskins was the back-up defense.

Player of The Year: RB LeSean McCoy (Buffalo Bills)
Biggest Disappointment: WR Allen Hurns (Jacksonville Jaguars)
